Why does my washer stink?

Mildew smell is caused by the buildup of detergent and softener residue on the inside of the plastic outer tub. Bacteria and mold spores are then transferred to towels and other laundry to make them smell like mold! The odor can get so bad it can even make your home stink! The heaviest buildup is almost invariably in the "splash area" just 3 to 5 inches above the normal waterline. Cleaning cycles in your washing machine do not reach the splash area.
